Mrs. Shreiner is a graduate of St. Norbert College and is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.  Mrs. Shreiner is beginning her fourth year of teaching, but her first year teaching fourth grade.  She has always wanted to be a teacher and is excited to be a part of the St. Joseph community. Prior to teaching 4th grade, Mrs. Shreiner taught transitional kindergarten at an early childhood center.  On a personal note, Mrs. Shreiner grew up in Wisconsin and moved to Illinois after she graduated college.  In her free time she enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, and being outside with her dog. She loves to read and is always looking for book recommendations for herself and her classes!

Week at a Glance: May 20 - May 24

Math: We are continuing Chapter 14 Geometry. This week we will cover lessons six through nine. Lessons six and seven explore drawing angles and solving problems with angles. The children will take a lesson three through seven quiz on Wednesday. Lessons eight and nine will cover triangles and quadrilaterals. 
Objectives: 
- Use a protractor to draw angles of a specified measure. 
- Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angles on a diagram in real-world and mathematical situations. 
- Classify triangles based on angle measure and describe triangles using their attributes. 
- Classify quadrilaterals using their attributes. 
 
Social Studies: We have finished our studies on the regions of the United States. The rest of the school year we will be focusing on exploring the state of Illinois. The students will begin by working individually to find specific research on different topics in Illinois. We will combine all our findings to create one book identifying geography, history, civics, and economics in the state of Illinois. 
Objectives:
- Identify the major geographic features of Illinois. 
- Research demographics, history, and economics using the geographic inquiry process, and showcase the information using a chart, graph, or maps. 
- Find information using maps, books, and the internet. 
- Research important events specific to Illinois. 
- Identify three factors of production in Illinois. 
 
Religion: The students will prepare for the Ten Commandment test this week completing a variety of activities. They will take the test on Wednesday. 
Objective: 
Consider how Scripture and Tradition can deepen your understanding. 
 
LA/Reading: We are continuing to learn more about the features of Earth in Unit 5 of MyView. The overall question for this unit is, why is it important to understand our planet? Our question for this week is, what makes an extreme location a place to both protect and explore? Our literary focus for this week is informational texts. We will read The Himalayas by Charles W Mayward. We will focus on finding details in the text that help support the main idea and summarizing those points, as well as making inferences. Our language convention for this week is understanding and applying comma rules. The vocabulary words for this week are: survey, subcontinental, plateau, altitude, and erosion. 
Objectives:
- Generate questions about text before, during, and after reading to deepen understanding and gain information. 
- Evaluate details read to determine key ideas. 
- Make inferences and use evidence to support understanding. 
- Discuss specific ideas in the text that are important to the meaning. 
- Uses commas and quotation marks to mark direct speech and quotations from a text. 
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on words with prefixes. The students will complete three word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge by decoding words using knowledge of prefixes.

Happy Thursday!
Today we are celebrating the letter N in the ABC Countdown. For the letter N, the children have No homework today! They will still have a Spelling and Reading test tomorrow.

Week at a Glance: May 13 - May 17

Reminders:
- Monday is J day for the ABC countdown, the students can wear their jammies or dress down from their missed day on Friday
 
Math: We are starting Chapter 14 Geometry. This week we will cover lessons one through five. These lessons will teach the students how to draw points, lines, and rays, how to draw parallel and perpendicular lines, how to model and classify angles, and how to measure angles. 
Objectives: 
- Students will draw points, lines, line segments, and rays and identify these in two-dimensional figures. 
- Students will draw parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines and identify these in two-dimensional figures. 
- Students will use concepts of angle measurement to classify angles. 
- Students will use a protractor to measure angles to the nearest degree. 
 
Social Studies: We are continuing our journey through the Western region this week by continuing to explore various cities throughout the region. Last week the children finished the research aspect of this project and started creating their presentation on Google Slides. This week, each group will finish their presentations and present them to the class.
Objectives:
- Identify reasons why the West has attracted people. 
- Apply map skills to locate important sites in the West. 
- Describe the physical and human features of the West  moving on from the Southwest and moving onto the Western region of the United States.
 
Religion: We we so busy last week we weren't able to finish all learning about the rest of the commandments. This week we will finish learning about the seventh through tenth commandments and start to prepare for the commandment test which will take place the following week. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Tradition can deepen your understanding. 
 
LA/Reading: We are continuing to learn more about the features of Earth in Unit 5 of MyView. The overall question for this unit is, why is it important to understand our planet? Our question for this week is, what daily actions can help reduce pollution? Our literary focus for this week is argumentative texts. We will read Top 10 Ways You Can Reduce Waste by Nick Winnick. We will focus on finding details in the text that help support the main idea and summarizing those points. Our language convention for this week is capitalization in titles. The vocabulary words for this week are: emissions, excessive, underlie, watt, and innovative. 
Objectives:
- Recognize characteristics and structures of argumentative text. 
- Make inferences and use evidence to support understanding. 
- Retell, paraphrase, or summarize texts in ways that maintain meaning in logical order. 
- Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases. 
- Use context within and beyond a sentence to determine the relevant meaning of unfamiliar words or multiple-meaning words. 
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on words with a VCCCV syllable pattern. The students will complete three word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge by decoding words using advanced knowledge of syllable division patterns such as VV.

Math: This week we are going to finish Chapter 13 as it is a shorter chapter. This week we will cover how to measure and calculate area as well as relate area and perimeter. We will spend a day reviewing the chapter and take the chapter test on Thursday. 
Objectives: 
- Students will find the perimeter of an area. 
- Students will find the area of rectangles and squares. 
- Students will relate area and perimeter. 
 
Social Studies: We are continuing our journey through the Western region this week by continuing to explore various cities throughout the region. The children will continue to work on their visual representation of one of the cities we explored. 
Objectives:
- Identify reasons why the West has attracted people. 
- Apply map skills to locate important sites in the West. 
- Describe the physical and human features of the West  moving on from the Southwest and moving onto the Western region of the United States.
 
Religion: This week we are going to conclude our study of the Ten Commandments. The children will prepare for the Commandment test by playing various games, role playing, and other interactive activities. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Tradition can deepen your understanding. 
 
LA/Reading: We are continuing to learn more about the features of Earth in Unit 5 of MyView. The overall question for this unit is, why is it important to understand our planet? Our question for this week is, in what ways do volcanoes impact Earth? We will read Volcanoes by Seymour Simon. We will focus on finding details in the text that help support the main idea. Our language convention for this week is capitalization rules and synonyms and antonyms. 
Objectives:
- Know that Earth consists of useful resources and its surface is constantly changing. 
- Recognize characteristics of and structures of informational text, including the central idea and supporting evidence. 
- Create mental images to deepen understanding. 
- Discuss specific ideas in the text that are important to the meaning. 
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on words with -en, -ent, or -ence. The students will complete three word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge. 
- Decode words using knowledge of suffixes, including how they can change base words such as dropping e, changing y to i, and doubling final consonants.
